It is agreed by most scholars that Buddhism was known in the pre-Christian Greek world through the campaigns of Alexander the Great (see Greco-Buddhism and Greco-Buddhist monasticism), and several prominent early Christian fathers (Clement of Alexandria and St. Jerome) were certainly aware of the Buddha, even mentioning him in their works.〔McEvilley, p391〕〔Clement of Alexandria Stromata. Bentley and Elaine Pagels suggest that there is a real possibility that Buddhism influenced the early development of Christianity".
